Questions people ask
How much is take-home pay on $100,000 in 2026?
A single filer paid $100,000 keeps $79,180 in Texas, which has no income tax, and $74,140 in California. Federal income tax is $13,170 and Social Security and Medicare $7,650 either way; the difference is the state.
Which state lets you keep the most of $100,000?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, which tax no wages: each keeps $79,180 for a single filer. The least is New York City, at $70,879. Every state is in the table on this page.
What is the difference between my tax bracket and my tax rate?
The bracket is the rate on your last dollar; your effective rate is all the tax over all the pay. On $100,000 single, the federal bracket is 22% but federal income tax is 13.2% of pay, because the first dollars are taxed at 0%, 10% and 12%.
What comes out of a paycheck besides income tax?
Social Security, 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 in 2026, and Medicare, 1.45% of all pay, with 0.9% more above $200,000 ($250,000 filing jointly). Your employer pays the same again.
Does a 401(k) lower my taxes?
Yes, income tax: pay put into a traditional 401(k) comes off federal income and most states', so at a 22% bracket each $1,000 put in costs $780 of take-home before the state. It doesn't lower Social Security or Medicare. Type it into the calculator to see yours.
What does this leave out?
Credits beyond the child tax credit, itemized deductions, other income such as interest, gains or a business, and a few county and city taxes. The tax forecast works from your own pay stub and takes all of those.
Checked on October 29, 2026 against Rev. Proc. 2025-32, SSA 2026 fact sheet and every state's published schedule. An estimate for your records, not tax advice.
From your own pay stub, with a business, kids, interest and gains, and what is left to pay: the tax forecast.
