What to know first
Which HSA receipt trackers are free?
Reimburse and HSA Orbit’s Google Sheet are free with no limit; the sheet is typed by hand. HSA Tracker is free for one person and 30 expenses, ReceiptPod for 30 receipts a month, TrackHSA for 20 scans a day with ads, and MyHSAHub is free to start.
What does the IRS want me to keep?
Records that show each withdrawal paid for a qualified medical expense that wasn’t paid or reimbursed another way and wasn’t taken as an itemized deduction. In practice that is the receipt or statement: who was paid, for what, when and how much. What an HSA can pay for.
Is there a deadline to take the money out?
No. A medical expense from after your HSA was opened can be paid back to you tax-free in any later year, as long as you still have the records. That is why a tracker that keeps every year matters. What waiting is worth.
Do I need an app, or will a spreadsheet do?
A spreadsheet and a folder of photos works if you keep it up. What an app adds is reading the receipt for you, a running total of what is waiting, and marking what you have already taken out so nothing is claimed twice.
Do any of these connect to my HSA?
Reimburse doesn’t, and HSA Tracker says it doesn’t today. You take the money out at your HSA, then mark the receipt as taken out in the tracker.
