Tax deductions for graphic designers
The software is the obvious one. Here is what else a freelance designer can deduct, from fonts to press proofs, and what each puts back at your tax rate.

What graphic designers miss
Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.
Font licenses
Desktop, web and app licenses bought for client work or your own brand. A font the client’s identity needs is a cost of that job.
Stock images, mockups and templates
Assets used in the work, or to present it to the client.
A pen display and a calibrated monitor
Equipment under $2,500 an item can be expensed in the year you buy it with the de minimis safe harbor.
Press proofs and samples
Paying to see it on paper before the client does, and printed pieces for your portfolio.
Portfolio platforms
Your portfolio site and pro plans on the showcase sites where clients find you are advertising.
Help on a big job
A designer or developer you bring in is contract labor. A 1099-NEC once you pay them $2,000 in a year.
Where a designer’s receipts go
Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a designer’s, so the line is right the first time.
| On the receipt | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| A monitor or tablet under $2,500 | Supplies, line 22, all in the year you buy it, if you elect the de minimis safe harbor. |
| A computer over $2,500 | Depreciation, line 13, usually all this year with Section 179 or bonus depreciation. |
| A font license or stock images | Other expenses, line 27a, with your software. |
| Press proofs | Supplies, line 22. |
| A portfolio site or showcase plan | Advertising, line 8. |
| A freelancer who helps on a job | Contract labor, line 11. |
What to write on it
- Which client was this for? A font or stock license tied to a job explains itself.
- Billed back to the client? Then what they pay you for it is income too.
- How much of it is work? A tablet or monitor you also use at home counts by its business share.

Sounds deductible, isn’t
Or has a catch.
- An iPad that’s mostly for watching
- Only the share you use for work, whatever you meant to use it for.
- Printing you bill to the client
- If you pay the printer and invoice the client, the print is your expense and the whole invoice is income.
- Clothes for client meetings
- Personal, however good the jacket. Only clothing unsuitable for everyday wear counts.
Questions graphic designers ask
Can graphic designers write off Adobe Creative Cloud?
Yes, by the share you use it for the business. Design software is filed with other expenses on line 27a.
Are fonts tax deductible?
Yes. Font licenses bought for client work or for your own business are a business expense in the year you buy them.
Can a designer deduct an iPad?
By the share you use it for design work. If it is mostly for watching and reading, only the work share counts.
Do I send a 1099 to a freelancer who helped on a project?
Send a 1099-NEC to anyone you pay $2,000 or more for services in 2026, and collect a W-9 before you pay. Payments made by card or through a payment app are reported by the processor instead.
