Where a makeup artist’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a makeup artist’s, so the line is right the first time.

On the receiptWhere it goes
Product for the kitSupplies, line 22.
An airbrush or a lit mirror under $2,500Supplies, line 22, all in the year you buy it, if you elect the de minimis safe harbor.
Parking at a venueCar and truck, line 9, on top of the mileage rate.
An assistant for the dayContract labor, line 11.
A photographer for a test shootAdvertising, line 8.
A hotel for a wedding out of townTravel, line 24a.

What to write on it

  • Client kit or your own? Product used on clients is a supply; what you wear yourself is personal.
  • Who assisted? You’ll need their W-9, and a 1099-NEC once they pass $2,000 for the year.
  • Where from, where to, and which job? A mileage record needs the date, the miles and the business reason.
  • Out of town overnight? Then the hotel and meals are travel, not a day out.

An example, not an average: a freelance makeup artist clearing $48,000 on weddings, editorial shoots and a few film days, driving to every job. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

Your own makeup
Personal, even on a shoot day. Keep the client kit separate so the line is easy to show.
All-black set clothes
Clothes you could wear anywhere are personal, however often you work in them.
A gift for a bride or a planner who refers you
Only $25 of it, per person, per year.

Questions makeup artists ask

Can makeup artists write off makeup?

Yes, the makeup you use on clients, as supplies on Schedule C line 22. Makeup you wear yourself is personal, even on the job.

Can I deduct my makeup kit and brushes?

Yes. Brushes, cases, lights and an airbrush under $2,500 an item can be expensed at once with the de minimis safe harbor; above that, Section 179 or bonus depreciation usually lets you take it all in the year you buy it.

Can a makeup artist deduct mileage?

Yes, for business drives, such as from your home office to a wedding or set, at the IRS rate of the day. Parking and tolls go on top.

Do I need to send my assistant a 1099?

Send a 1099-NEC to anyone you pay $2,000 or more in 2026. Collect a W-9 before you pay.
