What interior designers miss

Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.

A samples library

Where a designer’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a designer’s, so the line is right the first time.

What to write on it

  • Which client or project? It separates a cost of one job from the library you keep, and tells you what to bill back.
  • Billed to the client? Then what they pay you for it is income too.
  • Where did you drive from? Trips from your office to sites and showrooms count. Driving from home to a regular office elsewhere is commuting.

A designer’s year

An example, not an average: a residential interior designer clearing $85,000 in design fees, driving to job sites and going to one market a year. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

Furnishing your own home as a showcase
Personal, even if you photograph it for the portfolio.
Furniture you buy for clients
What you buy to resell to a client is cost of goods sold, and what the client pays you for it is income. It isn’t an expense the day you buy it.
A market trip that’s part vacation
The trip has to be mainly for the business, and the hotel and meals on the days you add for yourself are personal.

Questions interior designers ask

What can an interior designer write off?

Samples, design software, trade dues, professional insurance, portfolio photography, mileage to sites and showrooms, and trips to market. Furniture bought to resell to clients is cost of goods sold, not an expense when you buy it.

Is furniture for clients a business expense?

Not when you buy it. Furniture you resell to a client is cost of goods sold, and what the client pays you for it is income.

Can interior designers deduct a trip to High Point Market?

Yes, when the trip is mainly for the business: the flight, the hotel on business days and half of the meals.
