What coaches miss

Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.

Credentials that deepen your practice

Advanced training and credential renewals in the coaching you already do are education. The program that first made you a coach isn’t, because it trained you for a new line of work.

Where a coach’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a coach’s, so the line is right the first time.

What to write on it

  • A client, or a prospect? A meal needs the person and the business reason written on it.
  • Does this keep up work you already do? Education in your current coaching is deductible; training for a new line of work isn’t.
  • Which retreat or cohort? Tying the venue, travel and printing to one program keeps its costs together.

A coach’s year

An example, not an average: a leadership coach clearing $65,000 from one-on-one clients online, with one small retreat a year in another state. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

Your own coaching or therapy
Personal, even when it makes you a better coach.
Staying on after the retreat
The trip has to be mainly for the business, and only the business days’ hotel and meals count.
Lunch on your own between sessions
Your own meal on a working day isn’t a business meal. It needs a client or prospect at the table, and even then it counts at half.

Questions coaches ask

Can a life coach write off a coaching certification?

Advanced training and renewals in the coaching you already do are deductible as education. The first certification that qualified you to start coaching generally isn’t, because it trained you for a new line of work.

Can coaches deduct their own therapy or coaching?

No. Your own coaching, therapy and personal development are personal, even when they make you better at the work.

Is a coaching retreat tax deductible?

A retreat you run is: the venue is rent and your travel there is business travel. One you attend for your own growth is personal; a training for coaches in the work you do is education.

What software can coaches write off?

Scheduling, video calls, course platforms, email and invoicing tools used for the business are deductible in full. A tool you also use personally counts only for its business share.

Priced at your rate
