The laptop is the obvious one. Here is what else a freelance developer can deduct, from cloud bills to test phones, and what each puts back at your tax rate.

What freelance developers miss

Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.

Cloud, API and AI tool bills

Hosting, API usage and coding assistants you use for client work are business expenses in the month you pay them.

AWS
Software, hosting and API usage for August on Sep 3
$312.40
$113 back

Test devices

A phone or tablet kept only to test on is business equipment, in full.

Back Market
Supplies, a refurbished Android phone for testing on Aug 19
$219.00
$79 back

Hosting you pay for clients

Deductible when you pay it, and what they pay you back is income. Both go on the return.

Vercel
Software, a client’s hosting for September on Sep 1
$20.00
$7 back

Developer accounts and domains

App store developer programs, domains and certificates are costs of the business.

Apple Developer
Software, the developer program for a year on Feb 2
$99.00
$36 back

Conference tickets and travel

Staying current in the work you already do. The ticket is education, and the trip is travel when the conference is the reason you go.

AWS re:Invent
Education, a conference ticket on Jul 10
$2,099.00
$757 back

Other developers

Contract labor, in full. A 1099-NEC once you pay someone $2,000 in a year.

Tomás Rivera
Contract labor, front-end work on a client app on Sep 15
$1,500.00
$541 back

Where a developer’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a developer’s, so the line is right the first time.

On the receiptWhere it goes
A laptop or monitor under $2,500Supplies, line 22, all in the year you buy it, if you elect the de minimis safe harbor.
A workstation over $2,500Depreciation, line 13, usually all this year with Section 179 or bonus depreciation.
Cloud hosting, GitHub or an AI coding toolOther expenses, line 27a.
A conference ticketOther expenses, line 27a. The flight and hotel are travel, line 24a.
A subcontractorContract labor, line 11.
Errors and omissions insuranceInsurance, line 15.

What to write on it

  • Which client or project? A cloud bill tied to a project shows its purpose, and tells you what to bill back.
  • Billed back to the client? Then what they pay you for it is income too.
  • Shared with personal use? A plan or a device you also use at home counts by its business share.
  • Was the conference the reason for the trip? Travel is deductible when the trip is mainly for the business.

A developer’s year

An example, not an average: a freelance full-stack developer clearing $120,000 from four clients, working from home with one conference away. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

The whole internet bill
Only the business share, even if you work online all day.
A bootcamp before your first client
Education that qualifies you for a new trade isn’t deductible. Learning a new framework for work you already do is.
A gaming PC
A machine that is mostly for games counts only by its work share, and writing it all off under Section 179 needs more than half business use.

Questions freelance developers ask

Can freelance developers deduct AI coding tools?

Yes. Coding assistants, API usage and developer tools you use for the business are deductible, filed with other expenses on line 27a.

Is a laptop tax deductible for a software developer?

Yes, by the share you use it for work. Under $2,500 it can be expensed at once with the de minimis safe harbor; above that, Section 179 or bonus depreciation usually lets you take it all in the year you buy it.

Can I write off a coding bootcamp?

Only if it improves your skills in development work you already do. A course that qualifies you for a new trade, like one taken before your first development work, isn’t deductible.

Is hosting I pay for a client deductible?

Yes, when you pay it. What the client pays you back is income, so report both.
