Where a DJ’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a DJ’s, so the line is right the first time.

What to write on it

  • Which event? Mileage, parking and meals tied to a date show their purpose.
  • Who worked it with you? You’ll need their W-9, and a 1099-NEC once they pass $2,000 for the year.
  • To play out, or to keep? Music bought for the business counts. Your own collection doesn’t.

A DJ’s year

An example, not an average: a wedding and club DJ clearing $60,000, hauling a full rig to about sixty events. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

Your personal streaming plan
A plan you listen to at home is personal. A DJ service you play out from is a business subscription.
Stage outfits
Clothes you could wear out are personal, even if you only wear them behind the decks.
Records you also collect
Vinyl bought for your own shelf is personal. Only what you buy to play out counts.

Questions DJs ask

What can a DJ write off?

Controllers, speakers, lights, cases, record pools, liability insurance, advertising, mileage and parking to gigs, and anyone you pay to help. Clothes you could wear anywhere and music for your own listening stay personal.

Are record pools tax deductible?

Yes, when you use them for the music you play at paid events. They go with other expenses on line 27a.

Can DJs deduct mileage?

Yes, at the standard mileage rate or the car’s actual costs, plus parking and tolls. Log each gig with its date and where you drove.

Priced at your rate

What a deduction puts back depends on your state, your profit and how you file. Change any of it and every figure on this page reprices.
