Tax deductions for podcasters
The mic is the obvious one. Here is what else a podcaster can deduct, from hosting to guest gifts, and what each puts back at your tax rate.

What podcasters miss
Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.
Hosting and distribution
The monthly plan that puts the show everywhere is business software.
Editing and transcription
Paying someone, or software, to cut, caption and clean up each episode.
Guest gifts
Up to $25 per guest per year. A branded item that costs $4 or less and goes out widely, like a sticker, doesn’t count toward it.
Treating the room
Foam panels and a vocal booth are supplies. The room itself is a home office only if it’s used for nothing else.
Promoting the show
Ads on other shows and social posts you pay to boost are advertising.
Where a podcaster’s receipts go
Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as a podcaster’s, so the line is right the first time.
| On the receipt | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| A mic or interface under $2,500 | Supplies, line 22, all in the year you buy it, if you elect the de minimis safe harbor. |
| Hosting, editing and transcription plans | Other expenses, line 27a. |
| An editor or producer | Contract labor, line 11. |
| Ads for the show | Advertising, line 8. |
| A gift for a guest | Other expenses, line 27a, up to $25 a person. |
| Acoustic panels | Supplies, line 22. |
What to write on it
- Which episode? A gift, a meal or a trip tied to an episode shows its purpose.
- Who was the guest? Gifts are capped at $25 per person a year, so the name matters.
- Who edited it? You’ll need their W-9, and a 1099-NEC once they pass $2,000 for the year.
A podcaster’s year
An example, not an average: an independent podcaster clearing $50,000 from ads and listener memberships, recording weekly in a spare room. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t
Or has a catch.
- Calling the living room a studio
- The home office deduction needs a space used only for the business. Recording on the couch doesn’t make it one.
- Gifts over $25
- Only $25 per guest per year is deductible, however nice the gift.
- Products a sponsor sends you
- Free products sent to promote are generally income at what they’re worth.
Questions podcasters ask
What can a podcaster write off?
Mics, headphones and interfaces, hosting, editing and transcription, editors and producers, ads for the show, and a recording room used only for the business.
Are podcast guest gifts deductible?
Up to $25 per guest per year, whatever the gift cost. Keep the guest’s name with the receipt.
Is podcast equipment tax deductible?
Yes, by the share you use it for the show. Under $2,500 an item it can be expensed at once with the de minimis safe harbor; above that, Section 179 or bonus depreciation usually lets you take it all in the year you buy it.
