Is it HSA eligible?

Is LASIK HSA eligible?

Yes. Laser eye surgery to correct your vision is medical care, so LASIK can be paid from an HSA.

The rule

The IRS counts eye surgery to treat defective vision, and names laser eye surgery and radial keratotomy as examples. The exams before and after are eye exams, which count too.

It is a large bill, and there is no deadline for taking the money out. If the HSA is short today, you can pay yourself, keep the receipt and take the money out in a later year, as long as the surgery came after the HSA was opened.

Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.

Watch for
Anything insurance paid, or paid you back for, can’t also come out of the HSA. Only what you paid yourself counts.
