Are contact lenses HSA eligible?
Yes. Contact lenses you need for your eyesight count, and so do the saline solution and cleaner you use with them.
The rule
Contact lenses needed for medical reasons are medical care, the same as glasses. The IRS also counts what it takes to wear them, naming saline solution and enzyme cleaner.
The exam and fitting are eye care too. An eye exam counts because it diagnoses whether a disease is present.
Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.
- What to keep
- Receipts for the lenses and the solution, with the date and who they were for.
- Watch for
- Anything insurance paid, or paid you back for, can’t also come out of the HSA. Only what you paid yourself counts.

Keep the receipt. Take the money out later.
Pay a medical bill yourself and Reimburse keeps the receipt, with who it was for, until you take the money out of your HSA tax-free.
