Is it HSA eligible?

Are glasses HSA eligible?

Yes. Glasses you need to see properly, and the eye exam that finds you need them, can be paid from an HSA.

The rule

The IRS counts eyeglasses needed for medical reasons as medical care, frames and lenses together. The eye exam counts on its own, because it diagnoses whether a disease is present.

The glasses can be yours, your spouse’s or a dependent’s. Pay with the HSA card, or pay yourself, keep the receipt and take the money out of the HSA later.

Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.

What to keep
The itemized receipt from the optician or eye doctor: the date, who the glasses were for and what you paid after insurance.
Watch for
Anything insurance paid, or paid you back for, can’t also come out of the HSA. Only what you paid yourself counts.
