What yoga and fitness instructors miss

Not the laptop or the phone; everyone finds those. These are particular to the work, and each is shown the way Reimburse would log it.

Advanced teacher trainings

Training that deepens the teaching you already do is education. A first training taken to start teaching prepared you for a new line of work, and isn’t.

Where an instructor’s receipts go

Each goes on its own line of Schedule C. Start from this page and Reimburse reads your receipts as an instructor’s, so the line is right the first time.

On the receiptWhere it goes
A studio rented by the classRent on other business property, line 20b.
Mats, blocks and bolsters for studentsSupplies, line 22.
An advanced teacher trainingOther expenses, line 27a, as education.
Teaching liability insuranceInsurance, line 15.
Yoga Alliance registrationOther expenses, line 27a.
Miles between studiosCar and truck expenses, line 9.

What to write on it

  • Which class, and which studio? It ties the rent, the props and the miles to the teaching.
  • For your teaching, or your practice? Only what’s for teaching counts.
  • Where did the drive start? Studio to studio counts; home to the first class usually doesn’t.

An instructor’s year

An example, not an average: a yoga teacher clearing $35,000 teaching at three studios as a contractor and renting a room for her own Sunday class. Every amount is priced at your rate; change it below and the year moves.

Sounds deductible, isn’t

Or has a catch.

Classes you take as a student
Your own practice is personal, even when it keeps you ready to teach.
Leggings and studio clothes
You could wear them anywhere, so they’re personal.
Your personal streaming plan
It’s licensed for personal use, so it stays personal even if it plays in class.
A retreat you go on
A trip for your own practice is personal. A retreat you lead is business.

Questions yoga and fitness instructors ask

What can yoga instructors write off?

Studio rent for classes you run, props for students, advanced trainings, liability insurance, booking software, licensed music and miles between studios. Your own classes and clothes are personal.

Is a 300-hour yoga teacher training tax deductible?

If you already teach, advanced training that improves your teaching is deductible as education. A first training that qualified you to begin teaching generally isn’t, because it prepared you for a new line of work.

Can fitness instructors deduct classes they take?

Classes for your own practice or fitness are personal. A workshop on teaching, like cueing or sequencing for the classes you lead, is education.

Can I deduct mileage between studios?

Yes, driving from one studio to another on the same day is business mileage. The drive from home to your first class and back from the last is commuting, unless your home office is your principal place of business.

Priced at your rate
