Is teeth whitening HSA eligible?
No. The IRS treats teeth whitening as cosmetic, so an HSA can’t pay for it.
The rule
Publication 502 lists teeth whitening among the expenses that aren’t medical care, alongside cosmetic surgery.
Dental care that prevents or treats disease is different: cleanings, fillings, braces and the rest all count.
- What to keep
- Nothing for the HSA. A whitening charge on a dental bill should be left out of what you take from it.

Keep the receipt. Take the money out later.
Pay a medical bill yourself and Reimburse keeps the receipt, with who it was for, until you take the money out of your HSA tax-free.
