Are braces HSA eligible?
Yes. Braces are dental treatment in the IRS’s own list, so orthodontic work for you, your spouse or your child can be paid from an HSA.
The rule
The IRS counts treatment to alleviate dental disease and names braces in it, beside fillings, extractions and dentures.
Braces for a child are among the larger bills an HSA pays. You can pay the orthodontist yourself as the bills come, keep each statement, and take the money out of the HSA whenever you choose.
Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.
- What to keep
- The treatment plan and each statement or payment receipt.
- Watch for
- Only care after the HSA was opened counts. Publication 969 doesn’t say how that applies to braces put on before the HSA and paid for after, so keep every statement showing what each payment covered.
- Anything insurance paid, or paid you back for, can’t also come out of the HSA. Only what you paid yourself counts.

Keep the receipt. Take the money out later.
Pay a medical bill yourself and Reimburse keeps the receipt, with who it was for, until you take the money out of your HSA tax-free.
