Is it HSA eligible?

Can you use your HSA for your spouse or kids?

Yes. An HSA pays tax-free for your own medical care, your spouse’s and your dependents’.

The rule

Publication 969 lists whose care counts: you, your spouse, every dependent you claim, and anyone you could have claimed except that they filed a joint return, had too much income of their own, or you could be claimed as someone else’s dependent.

The list is about who the person is to you, not whose health plan they are on.

A child of parents who are divorced, separated or living apart for the last six months of the year counts as the dependent of both parents for this, whoever claims the child.

Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.

What to keep
Each receipt with who the care was for. Reimburse keeps a name on every one.
Watch for
A grown child on your health plan counts only if they are your dependent, or would be except for their own income or a joint return. Being on the plan isn’t enough.

Keep the receipt. Take the money out later.

Pay a medical bill yourself and Reimburse keeps the receipt, with who it was for, until you take the money out of your HSA tax-free.
