Is massage HSA eligible?
Only to treat a specific condition. A massage for relaxation or general well-being doesn’t count; massage therapy that treats an injury or illness can.
The rule
The IRS doesn’t list massage by name. It counts therapy received as medical treatment, and it rules out what is paid to improve general health or to relieve discomfort not related to a particular medical condition.
So the same massage can fall on either side. Treatment your doctor recommends for a diagnosed injury or condition is medical care. A spa massage, or one for stress or sore muscles in general, is not.
- What to keep
- A note from your doctor naming the condition and recommending the massage, and receipts saying what each session was.
Checked on October 2, 2026 against Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses and IRS FAQs on nutrition, wellness and general health. An estimate for your records, not tax advice.
Keep the receipt. Take the money out later.
Pay a medical bill yourself and Reimburse keeps the receipt, with who it was for, until you take the money out of your HSA tax-free.
