Is it HSA eligible?

Is a CPAP machine HSA eligible?

Yes, to treat a diagnosed condition such as sleep apnea. Equipment and supplies needed to treat a disease are medical care.

The rule

The IRS doesn’t name CPAP machines. Its definition of medical care includes the equipment, supplies and diagnostic devices needed to diagnose or treat a disease, and it lists oxygen equipment used to relieve breathing problems caused by a medical condition.

A machine prescribed for diagnosed sleep apnea, with the masks, tubing and filters it needs, fits that definition.

Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.

Watch for
Anything insurance paid, or paid you back for, can’t also come out of the HSA. Only what you paid yourself counts.
