Is it HSA eligible?

Is birth control HSA eligible?

Yes. Prescribed birth control counts, and so do condoms; since 2020 an HSA can also pay for birth control sold over the counter.

The rule

The IRS lists birth control pills prescribed by a doctor as a medical expense. Since Notice 2024-71 it treats condoms as medical care too, so an HSA can pay for them.

Since the CARES Act, an HSA can pay for medicine sold over the counter without a prescription, which covers birth control pills sold that way.

A legal sterilization, including a vasectomy, counts, and so does a pregnancy test kit.

Paid yourself, it waits in the HSA until you take the money out, this year or decades from now.
